Bridge and Tourism Fall

Aruba's Natural Bridge collapsed today. Probably not an earth-shattering (if you'll pardon the pun) event in the average person's life, but still reasonably significant. It is, after all, the island's largest tourist attraction and its most photographed spot. I dare not imagine the devastation if something so iconic came down in this country. Oh wait... Yeah, that's right. Ok, granted, thousands of people weren't killed and there will be no war proclaimed because of this national tragedy, but it's still sad nonetheless.
According to USA Today, "Aruba depends on tourism for 70% of its gross domestic product. It welcomes 728,000 visitors a year and an additional 550,000 cruise ship passengers. Some 70% are from the United States."

Lucky for them, most Americans will never notice an ecological phenomena in ruins.
