sprint to the demise

last quarter sprint lost 397,000 customers.  today i realized why.  it's not their advertising.

More to the story:
My Razr finally crapped out entirely and holds a battery charge for approx 1-2 hrs (assuming no use during that time).  Kinda takes the "mobile" functionality out of mobile phone, if it doesn't work unless plugged in.  Anyhoo, being a loyal sprint customer since I was 16!, i went to the sprint store expecting to somehow finagle a deal on a great new phone.  My eye candy: the Blackberry Curve they offer for $99 to new customers.  A $570 phone for $99, isn't too shabby by me and even as it would require me to up my plan to a data plan, the rates have fallen enough that I considered it worth it.

Heavens no! said the cell phone gods.  Through massive headsches and hassles, Sprint's customer service dept told me the best deal they could get me was $150 off the $570 phone if I bought it today.  If I wait until January 1, 2009, I can get it for $99, but their "system" wouldn't allow them to push that date a month.  In the irony of ironies, $570-$150 = $320.  If I were to CANCEL my contract with Sprint, pay $200 in cancellation fees, and either re-sign up for a new contract with Sprint or sign with a new company, I'd get the $99, bringing my total for the phone to $299.  Does that make sense to anyone else?

Yeah.  Me neither.
